‘HaramBlur’: AI-Based Browser Extension for Shariah-compliant Online Browsing

Mohamed Elganzory launches ‘HaramBlur,’ an AI-powered browser extension specifically designed to help Muslims avoid haram online content. Allah swt states in Qur’an 23:30 “˹O Prophet!˺ Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity. That is purer for them. Surely Allah is All-Aware of what they do.” As a result of this divine command, Muslim men and women are forbidden to deliberately look at the awrah of the opposite gender. This poses a challenge on the Internet which is filled with indecent images & videos on the majority of websites.

Using the Human AI library, the HaramBlur extension attempts to automatically detect and blur haram content. Users have the flexibility to set default blurring for all media, selectively unblurring permitted content, or blurring only detected impermissible material.

Elganzory explains, “HaramBlur is about providing a tool that aligns with our values in today’s digital world.” He emphasizes the extension’s open-source nature, available on GitHub, encouraging community collaboration and improvement.

Comparable to the Tahir extension, HaramBlur shares the goal of aiding Muslims in Shariah-compliant online browsing. However, it employs an AI-driven approach for automated detection and blurring of impermissible content, distinguishing it from Tahir’s blanket approach.

‘HaramBlur’ is now accessible for download on the Google Chrome Web Store, offering an efficient solution for Muslims seeking halal browsing practices.
